If anything ever screamed healthy, it’s wheatgrass! The popularly-juiced, nutrient-rich grass is rich in chlorophyll, amino acids, vitamins, enzymes and supplements. But to many, wheatgrass remains something of an enigma. We dug deep to uncover some of the most interesting (we think!) facts about wheatgrass.

Although coffee gets a bad rap, it’s actually a medicinal food. In fact, this stimulating bean isn’t nearly so bad as we’ve all been taught. Although I’m skeptical about grande latte supplementation in the long run (it’s a drug, after all)







  1. Apparently, coffee and alcohol really do go together. Believe it or not, alcohol drinkers who also drink coffee regularly have a lower chance of developing cirrhosis of the liver. That’s not to say it’s a healthy lifestyle - obviously, lowering your alcohol consumption is better. But…science says…
  2. Caffeine reduces risk of skin cancer. Sorry, venti quaffers, this prevention method is topical. Lotions containing caffeine (both from coffee and green tea) have been shown to prevent the occurrence of cancerous tumors on the skin - in murine trials, anyway.
  3. Have a smile with your morning brew! If you’re a caffephile, you don’t need this Johns Hopkins study to tell you that a cup or two a day increases your sense of well-being and happiness. You can thank dopamine for that, which also contributes to coffee’s addictive nature. But be aware, the study also noted that more than 2 cups daily increases the risk of anxiety and panic attacks. Some people respond more readily than others - if you find yourself feeling jittery or nervous, ease up on the joe.
  4. Caffeine may reduce chance of Parkinson’s Disease. A 30-year study has shown that non-coffee drinkers have a higher chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease than their coffee-drinking counterparts.
  5. Most Americans get their antioxidants from coffee. That doesn’t mean it’s the best source of antioxidants, just that it’s the most consumed. But, it’s true, coffee is very high in antioxidants. As for me, I’ll stick to fruit.
  6. Black gold. After petroleum, coffee is the second most valuable economic product in the world. Imagine the financial potential of running our cars on coffee grounds.
  7. Coffee may cut colon cancer in women. A 12-year study on Japanese women found that drinking 3 or more cups of coffee per day may actually halve the risk of developing colon cancer. They found no beneficial effect from green tea on the colon - in this case, it was strictly a coffee thing.
  8. Coffee and diabetes, that’s a tricky one. Even though a Finnish study shows that drinking large amounts of coffee can reduce the risk of developing Type-2 Diabetes, coffee drinkers who already have diabetes have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels.
  9. Coffee reduces muscle pain. After a hard workout, a cup or two of coffee has been shown to reduce muscle soreness (in women, anyway) more effectively than naproxen, aspirin and ibuprofen. (But don’t replace your water thermos with coffee.)
  10. Coffee will detox your liver in surprising ways. This remedy is not one for drinking: we’re talking about the coffee enema. Some people swear by it - using a tube to introduce coffee into the rectum and colon in order to stimulate the liver to remove toxins. Definitely not for the squeamish.
  11. Coffee may reduce chance of death from heart disease. Studies show that drinking 4-5 cups of coffee a day can make you less likely to die from heart disease. The researchers think it may have something to do with coffee’s anti-inflammatory effects.
  12. The devil is in the grounds. When coffee, which originated in Ethiopia and became popular in the Arab world, was first introduced to Western culture, Christian priests denounced it as the devil’s drink, given to the Muslims as a substitute for the wine (Christ’s blood) they weren’t allowed to consume. The belief at the time was that any coffee-drinking Christian risked burning in hell forever. Hooray, progress!
  13. Coffee may help with short term memory. It’s probably because of caffeine’s stimulant effects, but an Austrian study showed that volunteers given caffeinated coffee had better reaction times and short-term memory function than those who were given the cup of decaf.
  14. For women, caffeine may prevent long term memory loss. Because caffeine is a psychostimulant, older women who drink 3 or more cups of coffee or tea a day have less memory loss and cognitive decline than their counterparts who drink less or none. Unfortunately, caffeine consumption doesn’t seem to have any preventative effect against dementia.
  15. Caffeine won’t cause hypertension. Some of the studies can be contradictory and confusing. What we do know is that for non-habitual coffee drinkers, those first few cups will cause a temporary rise in blood pressure, but for regular drinkers, a tolerance develops and won’t cause any long term, permanent increase.
  16. The injustice of cheap coffee. No, it’s not just an injustice to your connoisseur taste buds; conventional coffee farming exploits workers and destroys communities in third world countries. On average, 5% of the profits actually make it back to the farmers, who are hungry, underpaid and treated badly. Why do they work on coffee plantations at all? Because in many cases, the plantations own the most fertile land (which was most often acquired unscrupulously) and the local people won’t survive from subsistence farming alone. How can you avoid supporting the cycle of poverty, corruption and injustice? Only buy Fair Trade certified coffee.
  17. Pesticides in your brew. Because almost all coffee is grown in third world countries with less stringent laws than Europe or the United States, your non-organic cuppa is probably laden with chemicals. That’s not just bad for you, it’s bad for the farmers and the tropical ecosystems in which the coffee is grown. Go organic, will ya?
  18. Pick your poison - literally. Caffeine is an alkaloid, which is a type of poisonous, bitter substance found in plants. Other alkaloids include strychnine, nicotine, morphine, mescaline, and emetine (the deadly ingredient in hemlock). Fortunately, in small quantities the bean is harmless, but it’s worth thinking about if you choose to use other drugs (both pharmaceutical and recreational).
  19. The FDA has approved caffeine for babies. This doesn’t mean you can wake up your sleepy infant with a bottle of latte. Caffeine injections have been used medicinally since 1999 in the United States to stimulate breathing in infants who are experiencing apnea. It’s still recommended that pregnant and breastfeeding women keep their caffeine intake to a minimum, but a modest amount is safe. 
  20. Coffee can fight cavities. Just avoid all the sugar and milk! Actually, roasted coffee has some  antibacterial properties, particularly against Streptococcus mutans, one of the major causes of cavities. By the way, these properties have nothing to do with caffeine, so decaf drinkers will get the same protection.

Despite the positive health studies, it’s best not to intentionally pick up the caffeine habit if you’re not already a regular coffee drinker. Even though some of the studies suggest drinking 3 or more daily cups to get the benefits, everyone is different. If it makes you jittery and sick to your stomach, stick to a milder pick-me-up like green tea or yerba mate. But if that morning cup makes you feel awake, alive and eager to greet the day, you might as well indulge (in moderation) in the world’s most well-loved drink.

The naked mole rat may look weird, but scientists have discovered it has a 'gloop’ that could lead to amazing new medicines, says Michael Hanlo

There are a few contenders for the title of “weirdest critter in the world”.
There is, for example, the three-toed sloth of Central America, which plays
host to an entire ecosystem, including cyanobacteria, insects and other
creatures that live in its sticky green fur. Then there is the bizarre
star-nosed mole, Condylura cristata, the only tentacled mammal, whose nose
contains 30,000 microscopic sensory organs and which probably “sees” the
world through touch. Or the mole-like Pyrenean desman, which looks like it
has been put together out of random components – part rat, part mole, part
shrew and part platypus.

But surely the award must go to the mysterious and curiously engaging naked
mole rat, Heterocephalus glaber, which is so weird in every respect that it
resembles a creature from outer space. Not only is it so unlike any other
mammal that it almost seems to deserve its own category, but scientists now
believe it may hold the key to curing cancer – and even, as Prof Steve Jones
has mentioned before on these pages, extending the human lifespan.
Uncommonly among mammals, mole rats do not get cancer, and last week,
scientists announced that they have finally discovered why. They hope the
“gloop” that they have identified in the animal could, in due time, form the
basis of a host of new medicines to treat not only cancer but diseases
ranging from atherosclerosis to arthritis.

It seems odd that the naked mole rat could spark any kind of medical
revolution. In terms of its ecology and physiology, these animals are
outliers. Naked mole rats are small, almost hairless rodents, about four
inches long, that live in eastern and southern Africa. They are the only
known “eusocial” mammal; the structure of a mole rat colony is identical to
that of hive insects such as bees, and other arthropods such as termites.
There is one female, a queen, who mates with a handful of fertile males; the
rest of the colony, which may number 80 or so, consists of sterile “workers”.

That is only the start of the weirdness. They are, as their name suggests,
naked (or nearly so – the odd whisker sprouts from their faces). They can
run backwards as fast as forwards, and can manipulate their goofy incisor
teeth individually, like chopsticks. Unlike all other mammals, naked mole
rats are not truly warm-blooded: they regulate their temperature in a crude
fashion, more like a lizard than, say, a mouse.


The oddities continue. Mole rats, which live off underground roots and tubers,
appear not be able to feel pain, at least on their skin. The pain receptors
found in all mammals – called nociceptors – are there, but they appear to be
turned off, as German scientists found when they studied the way the
receptors reacted to being immersed in corrosive chemicals. Douse a naked
mole rat in acid, and it will not flinch. (It is finding out how these
nociceptors operate that could be the key to new treatments for arthritis.)

Mole rats can also survive extraordinarily high degrees of carbon dioxide,
which builds up in their tunnels to levels that would kill a human in
minutes. In terms of cancer, numerous studies have failed to find a single
tumour in the thousands of individuals sampled.

Finally, there is the curious fact that these little rodents live for around
30 years – 10 to 20 times the lifespan of relatives such as rats and mice.
For most species, there is a rough correlation between size and longevity.
Big animals, the theory goes, tend to live longer because they are less
likely to die quickly of cold or starvation or be eaten. Thus genes that
confer health into old age can be passed on. That is why whales and giant
tortoises live longer than shrews and mice. Mole rats should live a few
years at most, but instead they can outlast chimpanzees.

It is, however, that resistance to cancer – which is probably related to their
longevity – that has proved the most intriguing puzzle. Now, Vera Gorbunova
and colleagues at the University of Rochester in New York have identified a
polysaccharide – a gloopy, sugar-based natural polymer – found in naked mole
rat cells that stops tumours growing. The scientists, whose study was
published in the current edition of Nature, suggest that the finding “opens
new avenues for cancer prevention and life-extension”.

The chemical, called high-molecular-mass hyaluronan (HMM-HA), acts as a kind
of lubricant, allowing mole rats to squeeze their Plasticine-like bodies
through the smallest and most convoluted tunnels: “They can virtually turn
somersaults in their skin,” Chris Faulks, a scientist at Queen Mary,
University of London said this week.

It seems, therefore, that the ability of HMM-HA to confer cancer resistance
was a happy evolutionary accident. And one day, it may be possible to
engineer the ability to produce HMM-MA in human tissues – hopefully without
the side effect, as Dr Faulks says, of making us all end up looking like
naked mole rats.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that an extraordinary feature in an
animal has been seized on as a possible cure for human ailments. While the
thesis of Dr I. William Lane’s Sharks Don’t Get Cancer, published in 1992,
is now widely held to be incorrect, crocodiles have an extraordinary ability
to fight off bacterial infections: injured crocs have been in bacterially
infested swamps, blood pouring out of open wounds, yet remained
infection-free.

Then there is one of the most intriguing findings of recent decades – that
chimpanzees do not get Aids, despite being susceptible to the same group of
retroviruses as humans. In fact, it is now believed that the Aids epidemic
started when the virus jumped species from ape to human, probably in the
forests of west Africa around 100 years ago, as a result of a hunting
accident or by consumption of ape meat. While chimps can get infected by the
virus, they do not go on to suffer the disease: the reason why may lurk in
the one per cent of the chimp genome that differs from ours.

That we can solve medical mysteries by looking at our close cousins is not
surprising; yet finding that an animal so weird, and so ugly, as the naked
mole rat could one day lead to a cure for cancer seems utterly bizarre.
However, this creature has gained the respect of an increasing number of
scientists: robust to the point of near-indestructibility, living in perfect
conflict-free communes, immune to pain and capable of spending years
underground at a time, this meekest of animals could, should the apocalypse
strike, be in pole position to inherit the Earth.

While expensive cancer drugs linked to premature death and mega-tumors are pushed by many mainstream doctors as the only option outside of chemotherapy, a growing number of informed individuals are consistently opting to instead utilize natural methods that are known to conquer cancer cells and effectively negate the disease — without harsh side effects. Even in the face of such overwhelming evidence (whether it be studies that have been available for decades, stories like those of Stewart’s, or the prominent role of turmeric spice in multi-national cultures), mainstream health organizations and traditional medical doctors continue to cling to radiation and dangerous cancer drugs as the only possible option to ‘treating’ cancer. Just as Stewart’s doctor warned her that diet would do virtually nothing despite saving her life and eliminating cancer from her body completely, these individuals will continue to assert that all alternative medicine is a joke.
In the same vein, cancer researchers will continue to be paid by charity walks and expensive non-profit events to ‘find the cure’ through invasive surgeries and pharmaceuticals. Turmeric spice, a dirt cheap alternative along with other nearly-free suprfoods, are blatantly ignored as they cannot be patented and sold through Big Pharma’s proverbial commodity gates. Thankfully, millions worldwide are waking up to this ‘old paradigm’ of health full of pharmaceuticals, surgery and sickness. In turn, they are utilizing life-saving techniques and foods to further their health without sacrificing both their finances and their health.

Scientists have found a new way to target and kill human prostate cancer without the side effects that come with hormone treatment and chemotherapy by genetically modifying the chicken virus Newcastle disease.

Newcastle disease is bad news for chickens and other birds, domestic and wild, but new research suggests the virus may become an effective treatment for prostate cancer.

Scientists have noted the anti-cancer properties of Newcastle disease since the 1950′s.  Virologist Elankumaran Subbiah at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine have modified the virus; “We modified the virus so that it replicates only in the presence of an active prostate-specific antigen and, therefore, is highly specific to prostate cancer,” Subbiah told Virginia Tech News.
“The recombinant virus efficiently and specifically killed prostate cancer cells, while sparing normal human cells in the laboratory, but it would take time for this to move from the discovery phase to a treatment for prostate cancer patients.”

People that have come into contact with birds that have the Newscastle disease virus have been shown to have mild conjunctivitis and flu-like symptoms but it doesn’t pose a serious health threat to human health.
Earlier human clinical trials for other types of cancer with naturally occurring Newscastle disease virus required several injections of the virus in large quantities for success.
Subbiah believes that the modified virus would be able to eliminate prostate cancer in much lower doses as it would seek out metastatic prostate cancer cells and remove them.

About 1 in 6 men will develop prostate cancer.  The study claims this treatment can kill prostate cancer cells of all kinds, including hormone-resistant cancer cells.
“We are looking for commercial entities that are interested in licensing the technology for human clinical trials and treatment. Newcastle disease virus has yet to be tested as a treatment for prostate cancer in patients.”

Last month, a related study published in the journal Stem Cells titled, "Radiation-induced reprogramming of breast cells," found that ionizing radiation reprogrammed less malignant (more differentiated) breast cancer cells into iBCSCs, helping to explain why conventional treatment actually enriches the tumor population with higher levels of treatment-resistant cells. [i]

A growing body of research now indicts conventional cancer treatment with chemotherapy and radiation as a major contributing cause of cancer patient mortality.  The primary reason for this is the fact that cancer stem cells, which are almost exclusively resistant to conventional treatment, are not being targeted, but to the contrary, are encouraged to thrive when exposed to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

In order to understand how conventional treatment drives the cancer into greater malignancy, we must first understand what cancer is....

What Are Cancer Stem Cells, And Why Are They Resistant To Treatment?

Tumors are actually highly organized assemblages of cells, which are surprisingly well-coordinated for cells that are supposed to be the result of strictly random mutation. They are capable of building their own blood supply (angiogenesis), are able to defend themselves by silencing cancer-suppression genes, secreting corrosive enzymes to move freely throughout the body, alter their metabolism to live in low oxygen and acidic environments, and know how to remove their own surface-receptor proteins to escape detection by white blood cells. In a previous article titled "Is Cancer An Ancient Survival Program Unmasked?" we delved deeper into this emerging view of cancer as an evolutionary throw-back and not a byproduct of strictly random mutation.

Because tumors are not simply the result of one or more mutated cells "going rogue" and producing exact clones of itself (multi-mutational and clonal hypotheses), but are a diverse group of cells having radically different phenotypal characteristics, chemotherapy and radiation will affect each cell type differently.

Tumors are composed of a wide range of cells, many of which are entirely benign.
The most deadly cell type within a tumor or blood cancer, known as cancer stem cells (CSCs), has the ability to give rise to all the cell types found within that cancer.

They are capable of dividing by mitosis to form either two stem cells (increasing the size of the stem population), or one daughter cell that goes on to differentiate into a variety of cell types, and one daughter cell that retains stem-cell properties.

This means CSCs are tumorigenic (tumor-forming) and should be the primary target of cancer treatment because they are capable of both initiating and sustaining cancer.  They are also increasingly recognized to be the cause of relapse and metastasis following conventional treatment.

CSCs are exceptionally resistant to conventional treatment for the following reasons
  1. CSCs account for less than 1 in 10,000 cells within a particular cancer, making them difficult to destroy without destroying the vast majority of other cells comprising the tumor.[ii]
  1. CSCs are slow to replicate, making them less likely to be destroyed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments that target cells which are more rapidly dividing.
  1. Conventional chemotherapies target differentiated and differentiating cells, which form the bulk of the tumor, but these are unable to generate new cells like the CSCs which are undifferentiated.
The existence of CSCs explains why conventional cancer treatment has completely missed the boat when it comes to targeting the root cause of tumors. One reason for this is because existing cancer treatments have mostly been developed in animal models where the goal is to shrink a tumor. Because mice are most often used and their life spans do not exceed two years, tumor relapse is very difficult, if not impossible to study.
The first round of chemotherapy never kills the entire tumor, but only a percentage. This phenomenon is called the fractional kill. The goal is to use repeated treatment cycles (usually six) to regress the tumor population down to zero, without killing the patient.
What normally occurs is that the treatment selectively kills the less harmful populations of cells (daughter cells), increasing the ratio of CSCs to benign and/or less malignant cells.  This is not unlike what happens when antibiotics are used to treat certain infections. The drug may wipe out 99.9% of the target bacteria, but .1% have or develop resistance to the agent, enabling the .1% to come back even stronger with time.
The antibiotic, also, kills the other beneficial bacteria that help the body fight infection naturally, in the same way that chemotherapy kills the patient's immune system (white blood cells and bone marrow), ultimately supporting the underlying conditions making disease recurrence more likely.
The reality is that the chemotherapy, even though it has reduced the tumor volume, by increasing the ratio of CSCs to benign daughter cells, has actually made the cancer more malignant.
Radiotherapy has also been shown to increase cancer stem cells in the prostate, ultimately resulting in cancer recurrence and worsened prognosis.[iii] Cancer stem cells may also explain why castration therapy often fails in prostate cancer treatment.[iv]

Non-Toxic Natural Substances Which Target and Kill CSCs

Natural compounds have been shown to exhibit three properties which make them suitable alternatives to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy:
  1. High margin of safety: Relative to chemotherapy agents such as 5-fluorouracil natural compounds are two orders of magnitude safer
  2. Selective Cytotoxicity: The ability to target only those cells that are cancerous and not healthy cells
  3. CSCs Targeting: The ability to target the cancer stem cells within a tumor population.
The primary reason why these substances are not used in conventional treatment is because they are not patentable, nor profitable. Sadly, the criteria for drug selection are not safety, effectiveness, accessibility and affordability. If this were so, natural compounds would form an integral part of the standard of care in modern cancer treatment.
Research indicates that the following compounds (along with common dietary sources) have the ability to target CSCs:

  1. Resveratrol (Red Wine; Japanese Knotweed)
  1. Quercetin (Onion)
  1. Sulforaphane (Brocolli sprouts)
  1. Parthenolide (Butterbur)
  1. Andrographalide (Andrographis)
  1. Genistein (Cultured Soy; Coffee)
  1. Piperine (Black Pepper)

Curcumin, the powerful antioxidant of the popular Indian spice Turmeric, may benefit cardiovascular health to the same extent as exercise, says new data from a clinical trial from Japan.

Phytochemicals found in turmeric have been investigated in preliminary research for their beneficial effects on diseases, such as cancer, arthritis, and other clinical disorders

Previous research has shown that daily supplements of curcumin combined with diet and exercise strategies could be associated with more than a 60% reduction in triglyceride levels, a reduction known impossible through pharmaceutical intervention alone.

Powdered turmeric has been used for centuries to treat a host of illnesses. It inhibits inflammatory reactions, has anti-diabetic effects, reduces cholesterol among other powerful health effects. A recent study led by a research team in Munich showed that it can also inhibit formation of metastases.

May Match Exercise in Cardiovascular Health Benefits

Vascular health, as measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), improved equally in groups of women receiving the curcumin supplements and those receiving aerobic exercise training, according to findings published in Nutrition Research .

A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition indicated that decreased FMD is reported to be a predictor of future adverse cardiovascular events, with every 1% decrease in FMD associated with a 12% increase in risk.

“Therefore, regular ingestion of curcumin could be a preventive measure against cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women,” they wrote.

“Furthermore, our results suggest that curcumin may be a potential alternative [...] for patients who are unable to exercise.”

Benefits

Curcumin, the natural pigment that gives the spice turmeric its yellow color, has increasingly come under the scientific spotlight in recent years, with studies investigating its potential health benefits.

The new study suggests that endothelial function may also be added to the list of potential benefits from curcumin.

Endothelial health is gaining more visibility with the product formulation community. One of the sessions at the recent IFT show in Las Vegas in June focused on the category as a possible avenue for new health claims.

A recent article by NutraIngredients-USA discussed the potential of the market and how to communicate the benefits to consumers.

Study details

Researchers from the University of Tsukuba recruited 32 post-menopausal women and assigned them to one of three groups: The first group acted as the controls, the second group underwent an aerobic exercise training regime, and the third group received curcumin supplements (Theracurmin from Theravalues Corporation, Tokyo).

The curcumin used in the study was described as a “highly absorptive curcumin dispersed with colloidal nanoparticles”. A daily dose of 25 milligrams was provided.

The study lasted for eight weeks, after which the results showed that FMD increased significantly and equally by about 1.5% in both the exercise and curcumin groups, compared with no changes in the control group.

“The mechanism responsible for the curcumin ingestion induced improvement in endothelial function is unclear,” said the researchers.

“Curcumin exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects by inhibiting tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), suggesting that its effect on endothelial function may be mediated by the suppression of inflammation and/or oxidative stress via down-regulation of TNF-alpha. However, TNF-alpha levels were mot assessed in this study.

“Further studies are warranted to clarify the mechanism underlying the effect of curcumin on endothelial function.”

The study was funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
